About NPS Calculator

National Pension System (NPS) is a government-sponsored, defined contribution pension scheme launched by the Government of India to provide retirement income to all Indian citizens. NPS is regulated by the Pension Fund Regulatory and Development Authority (PFRDA) and offers a systematic approach to retirement planning with professional fund management, low costs, and tax benefits. The scheme is designed to enable systematic savings during the subscriber's working life, which can be partially withdrawn at retirement and the remaining corpus used to purchase an annuity for regular pension income.

NPS offers two types of accounts: Tier I (mandatory retirement account with lock-in until age 60) and Tier II (voluntary savings account with no lock-in). The scheme provides flexibility in investment choices with different fund managers and asset allocation options. Subscribers can choose between Active Choice (self-select asset allocation) and Auto Choice (life-cycle based allocation). The minimum contribution is ₹500 per year for Tier I and ₹250 per transaction for Tier II, making it accessible to all income groups.

One of the key advantages of NPS is its tax efficiency. Contributions up to ₹1.5 lakh qualify for deduction under Section 80C, and an additional ₹50,000 deduction is available under Section 80CCD(1B). The scheme also offers tax benefits on employer contributions under Section 80CCD(2). At maturity, 60% of the corpus can be withdrawn tax-free, while 40% must be used to purchase an annuity. Partial withdrawals are allowed after 3 years for specific purposes like higher education, marriage, or medical emergencies.

NPS investments are managed by professional fund managers across equity, corporate bonds, and government securities. The scheme offers market-linked returns with the potential for higher growth compared to traditional pension schemes. However, returns are subject to market risks and are not guaranteed. The low expense ratio (typically 0.01% to 0.25%) makes NPS one of the most cost-effective retirement investment options available. Use our calculator to estimate your retirement corpus and plan your NPS contributions effectively.

NPS Calculation Formula

Corpus = P × [((1 + r)^n - 1) / r] × (1 + r)

Lumpsum Withdrawal = Corpus × 60%

Annuity Amount = Corpus × 40%

Monthly Pension = (Annuity × 6%) / 12

Where:

P = Monthly Investment, r = Monthly Return Rate, n = Number of months
